09 mei 2009Vosse and the Aston after the concert of the Wauters brothers in the Viper

During the first qualifying session of the second meeting of the Belgian GT Mediagroep Van Dyck held on the Spa circuit, mainly reserved for the “amateurs” we enjoyed an excellent battle between brothers, namely Koen and Kris Wauters in their respective KRK Dodge Vipers. Koen finally settled matters to his advantage, with a 0.248 second bonus over his brother.

Behind the Clouseau brothers we find Tim Verbergt in the Audi R8 LMS who appears to have settled down since the first meeting in Zolder. In fourth place we find the Porsche of Bert Longin, ahead of the Lamborghini JD by KS with the Van Der Zwaan brothers and the Ferrari of Francorchamps Motors – Delahaye, with Damien Coens and Fred Bouvy, the present leaders in the championship. .
At this meeting the Belgians will be joined by the British contingent, however the British GT3s are shod with Avon tyres, whereas the Belgians are on Michelin rubber. In their ‘ranking’ the Rollcentre Mosler of Daniel Brown and Stuart Hall came out on top, but in fact only ninth overall, ahead of the brand new Ginetta G50Z, a guest car in the British championship. At this rate it does look as though it won’t turn into a real Belgium-England match.

Hardly any suspense during the second session, with Vincent Vosse registering a fast time early on in the beautiful Barwell Aston Martin. The Verviers based driver was finally six tenths faster than the Dodge of Belgium’s former F3000 driver Jeffrey Van Hooydonk in the KRK Viper and the Ford GT of Duncan Huisman. The Audi of “Jeff” Hemroulle was fourth, but in fact 2.2 seconds down. Even worse was the result of the champion Fred Bouvy, unable to achieve anything better than a thirteenth place overall.
Fastest Brit on the track was Allan Simonsen, in a Ferrari 430, 5th overall.

Tomorrow the first race starts at 12.10hrs, whereas the second race of the weekend will take place early on Sunday morning at 9.05hrs.
